BRITAIN’S richest man decided against buying Chelsea because the stadium problems would take too long to resolve. Sir Jim Ratcliffe was looking for his INEOS group to move into football and s.

These steps were removed for Shearer's Bar. The completion of the redevelopment of the Gallowgate saw the creation of Shearer's Bar, an expanded club shop, a club museum and a new box office.

This expansion would be funded by the city council and linked to the redevelopment of the land behind the stand and over the Metro Station, which had previously been earmarked for the casino project.

Expansion of the Gallowgate end involves difficulties due to the proximity of a road, Strawberry Place, and issues surrounding reinforcement of the underground St James Metro station.

The redevelopment plans announced under the previous regime were put on hold following the takeover of the club and its plc holding company by owner Mike Ashley.

A large advertising sign for Sports Direct appeared on the lip of the roof of the Gallowgate, visible from the pitch.

A full review of the club performed by the new management team concluded that stadium expansion was not a priority.

The area of seats designated as the family enclosure were expanded, and certain corporate areas saw increased pricing.

The first game after Keegan's resignation, a league fixture against Hull on 13 September , registered a crowd of 50, [32] amid protests against Ashley and Dennis Wise.

This was followed by an attendance of 44, [33] on 27 September in a league fixture against Blackburn Rovers , which followed a record low attendance of 20, [34] on Wednesday, 24 September in a League Cup fixture, the lowest ever attendance for a competitive first-team match since the promotion to the top flight , [35] and a drop of over 4, from previous lows.

Although Newcastle's crowds inevitably fell in —10 as a result of their relegation and the fact that Britain was still in recession , the Magpies still attracted a modern-day record average attendance for a club at this level with their attendance for the season averaging at 43, They also became the first club to attract a league attendance of more than 50, at this level in the modern era, and ended the season promoted as champions of the Football League Championship.

In October , a scoreboard was installed in the far corner of the Sir John Hall Stand. The scoreboard was used for the first time on 18 October during a Premier League tie against Leicester City.

However the game was delayed one hour, due to damage caused by strong wind to the paneling surrounding the scoreboard.

Newcastle United later stated on their website: "Supporter safety was of paramount importance.

On 10 November , Newcastle United announced that the stadium would officially be renamed Sports Direct Arena , as a temporary measure to "showcase the sponsorship opportunity to interested parties", whilst looking for a sponsor for possible future stadium re-branding.

According to the club, the St James' Park title was dropped as not being "commercially attractive". Previously, in , the club had announced plans to sell the naming rights for the stadium.

After protests about the possible loss of the name of the stadium, which included the tabling of an early day motion in Parliament, the club clarified the following week that the move would not involve the loss of the name St James' Park altogether, citing the example of 'SportsDirect.

On 9 October , payday loan company Wonga. They subsequently announced that the St James' Park name would be restored as part of the deal.

St James' Park is spelt with James' featuring one s and an apostrophe mark, as seen on the signage of the St James' Park steps outside the entrance to the stadium, and signage inside the adjacent Metro station.

The use of an apostrophe is in contrast with the name of the Metro station itself, which is signed as St James Metro station , and with the street signs [41] of the nearby St James Street [42] and St James Terrace.

The full stop after the St giving St. James' Park is both included and omitted by many sources, including the club's official website address information.

Post-millennium it has been debated both whether the written name should include an apostrophe mark after St James, [41] and, if it does, whether the official written form should include an extra 's' after the apostrophe.

In May BBC Look North examined the case for adding an extra 's', to denote the ground is "the park of St James". The club insisted the name is pronounced without a second 's', whilst it was asserted by the BBC that older fans, in particular, pronounce it with two.

A professor of applied linguistics of Newcastle University stated that if a second 's' was added to the name, it has to ultimately be pronounced in speech.

James's Park, with the second 's' pronounced. Commenting on the written form on Radio Newcastle a week after the BBC story, a different senior lecturer in applied linguistics also of Newcastle University stated that if the name is to denote "the park of St James", the written form should feature an apostrophe, but the use of an additional 's' after it is optional and both are correct.

Match-day programmes printed up until the late s have written the name as St. James's Park [ citation needed ]. According to the club historian, the oldest memorabilia in the club museum refers to the ground as being pronounced without a second 's'.

James's Park. Other sources also support the idea that the name should have no apostrophe as found in the name of the adjacent St James Street [48].

Regardless of the official name, the stadium is known by its initials of St James' Park SJP , or the contraction, St James'. In reflection of the early use of the site, it is also often referred to as Gallowgate, not to be confused with similarly unofficially named Gallowgate End, the name of the south stand.

The stadium is bordered by Strawberry Place behind the Gallowgate, Barrack Road in front of the main entrance, a car park to the north and Leazes Terrace to the East.

The Milburn stand is the 'main' stand of the stadium, housing the main entrance, lifts and escalators behind a glass fronted atrium.

The dugouts and player's tunnel is located in the traditional position of the middle of the main stand.

The stadium has an asymmetrical appearance from the air [6] and from some angles from ground level, due to the discrepancy in height between the sides and ends of the ground.

The Milburn stand and Leazes end are double tiered, separated by a level of executive boxes; The East Stand and Gallowgate End are single tiered, with boxes also at the top of the Gallowgate.

The three newest sides, the Milburn Stand, Leazes End and Gallowgate End are of structural steel frame and pre-cast concrete construction.

The Milburn Stand and Leazes End now rise higher than this level, covered by a one piece cantilevered glass roof.

A further smaller stand section rises above this level behind the Gallowgate End. The current stadium design offers an unobstructed view of the pitch from all areas of the ground.

The Milburn stand is the location of the directors box and press boxes, and the main TV camera point for televised games. Away fans for league matches were originally accommodated in the upper level, in the north west corner, [49] which can hold a maximum of 3, fans.

This location has attracted criticism due to the poor view offered by being so far from the pitch due to the height of the stand, and the 14 flights of stairs to reach the upper level.

The traditional home of the more vocal fans is considered the Gallowgate End, in the same vein as The Kop for Liverpool F.

In recent years there has been unofficial fan movement to create a singing section in the Leazes End upper tier, partly to counter the away fans, and partly to recreate some atmosphere lost since the recent expansion over 36, Level 7 of the Milburn Stand houses the official Family Enclosure.

Due to the expansion of the Family Enclosure, many fans from the singing section have relocated to the Strawberry Corner. In a group began to help 'Bring Back The Noise' as St.

James Park, this being branded as 'Division '92'. This group first began at home to Metalist Kharkiv in the Europea League.

From that date the group began to move from strength to strength with new aims set to develop a singing section within the ground for all league games.

As well as the normal Premiership football stadium facilities, the stadium contains conference and banqueting facilities. These comprise a total of 6 suites with a total capacity of 2,, including the 1, capacity Bamburgh Suite containing a stage, dance floor and 3 bars, and the New Magpie Room , on two levels with a pitch view.

The stadium houses premium priced seating areas designated into clubs, each with their own access to a bar and lounge behind the stand for use before the match and at half-time.

The Gallowgate End houses NINE , a sports bar and lounge, which is effectively another city centre nightspot in Newcastle, accessible only from the exterior of the ground.

The bar is named after Newcastle United's famous number Nine shirt, which has been worn by famous strikers throughout the years, including Alan Shearer.

The Gallowgate also houses a large club shop, a police station. In the south west corner there is also a cafe and a club museum. The stadium has a maximum seating capacity of 52,, [56] making it:.

Developments since have ensured the lower tier of seating of the ground still forms a continuous bowl around the pitch, below the level of the executive boxes.

The club record attendance is 68, [2] set in against Chelsea , when standing was allowed on the terraces. Newcastle United have played their home league matches continuously at St James' Park.

The stadium had not featured a scoreboard or big screen of any kind since the expansion displaced one from The Gallowgate end, although in bright red digital time displays were installed near the corner flags at pitch level.

Keegan took Newcastle to two consecutive runners-up finishes in the league in —96 and —97 , coming very close to winning the title in the former season which included a 4—3 game against Liverpool at Anfield — often considered the greatest game in Premier League history — which ended with a defining image of the Premier League with Keegan slumped over the advertising hoarding.

Keegan left Newcastle in January and was replaced by Kenny Dalglish , however the club endured a largely unsuccessful season with a 13th-place finish in the —98 FA Premier League , failure to progress beyond the group stages of the —98 UEFA Champions League despite beating Barcelona and group winners Dynamo Kiev at St James' Park as well as coming from 2—0 down to draw 2—2 with Valery Lobanovsky 's team in Ukraine and defeat in the FA Cup Final.

Dalglish was replaced as manager early in the following season by Ruud Gullit. The club once again finished thirteenth in the league and lost the FA Cup Final.

Gullit fell into disagreements with the squad and chairman Freddy Shepherd , and quit the club four games into the — season with the team bottom of the table to be replaced by Bobby Robson.

A title challenge emerged during the —02 season , and Newcastle's fourth-place finish saw them qualify for the UEFA Champions League. The following season, Robson guided the team to another title challenge and finished third in the League, and the second group stage of the Champions League, [16] after being the first team to have progressed past the first group stage after losing their first three games.

Graeme Souness was brought in to manage by the start of the —05 season. In his time at the helm, he broke the club's transfer record by signing Michael Owen.

Souness also took the geordies to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup with Alan Shearer winning the tournament's golden boot as well. Despite finishing the —06 season in seventh, Roeder's fortunes changed in the —07 season , with a terrible injury run to the senior squad, and he left the club by mutual consent on 6 May Sam Allardyce was appointed Roeder's replacement as manager on 15 May Allardyce departed the club on in January by mutual consent after a bad start to the —08 season , [32] and Kevin Keegan was reappointed as Newcastle manager.

In September Keegan resigned as manager, stating: "It's my opinion that a manager must have the right to manage and that clubs should not impose upon any manager any player that he does not want".

Hughton led Newcastle to win the —10 Football League Championship , securing automatic promotion on 5 April with five games remaining, and securing the title on 19 April; Newcastle were promoted back to the Premier League after just one season away.

Under Hughton, Newcastle enjoyed a strong start to the —11 season , but he was sacked on 6 December The club's board stated that they felt "an individual with more managerial experience [was] needed to take the club forward.

The start of the —12 season was very successful as they went on to enjoy one of their strongest openings to a season, playing 11 consecutive games unbeaten.

Further honours were to come as Pardew won both the Premier League Manager of the Season [50] and the LMA Manager of the Year awards.

In the following season Newcastle made few acquisitions in the summer and suffered injuries over the season. As a result, the first half of the season was marred by a run of ten losses in 13 games, which saw the club sink near the relegation zone.

The Europa League campaign was largely successful with the team making the quarter-finals before bowing out to eventual finalists Benfica. The —15 season saw Newcastle fail to win any of their first seven games, prompting fans to start a campaign to get Pardew sacked as manager before an upturn in form saw them climb to fifth in the table.

Pardew left for Crystal Palace in December. On 9 June , Carver was sacked and replaced by Steve McClaren the following day.

Newcastle returned to the Premier League at the first attempt, winning the Championship title on 7 May with a 3—0 win against Barnsley.

As such Ashley came under increased scrutiny for his lack of investment in the squad and apparent focus on other business ventures. On 17 July , Steve Bruce was appointed as manager on a three-year contract.

The club's home colours are a black and white striped shirt. Shorts and socks are usually black with white trim, though white socks are sometimes worn under some managers who consider them "lucky".

In , the club adopted the black and white striped shirts, which had been used as the reserve team's colours. These colours were chosen for the senior team because they were not associated with either of the two teams United were merged from.

They played in grey shorts until , and between and , they played in blue shorts before adopting the black shorts they play in now.

United's away colours have changed a number of times over the years. They played in white shirts and black shorts from until , and then white shorts until They then played in yellow shirts and blue shorts for the —68 season , but from to played in all red with an all blue third kit.

In , they returned to a yellow shirt, which they played with various coloured shorts until They played in all grey from to , before once again returning to the yellow kit until Since , the away kit has changed consistently and has not been the same for more than a single season.

On 4 January , Virgin Money , who had just bought Northern Rock, signed a two-year deal to sponsor Newcastle United. The deal meant Puma supplied the team kit, replica kit and training equipment for the —11 and —12 seasons.

The current club crest was first used in the —89 season. The crest includes elements from the coat of arms of the city of Newcastle upon Tyne —the two sea horses representing Tyneside's strong connections with the sea, the castle representing the city's Norman keep.

The design was of a circular shape, which featured the club's name in full, it contained a magpie standing in front of the River Tyne with the historic Norman castle of Newcastle in the background.

On 16 May , Newcastle released the away shirt for the —14 season which for the first time featured the Wonga.

The shirt received mixed reviews from Newcastle supporters, who described the shirt as both "awesome" and "bland", as quoted in the Newcastle daily Evening Chronicle.

On 15 May , the home shirt for the —18 season was revealed, featuring the logo of new sponsors Fun The shirt was shown to include a gold and silver commemorative crest to mark the club's th football season, based on the city's coat of arms.

It was also announced that the kit would feature red numbers for the first time since the —93 season. Newcastle's current kit manufacturers are Puma , in a deal that started in Previous kit manufacturers include Bukta —75, —80 , Umbro —76, —93 , Asics —95 and Adidas — Other current team sponsors include Fun88, Carling , Coral , Pulman , Thomas Cook Group and Stelrad.

Throughout Newcastle United's history, their home venue has been St James' Park, the oldest and largest football stadium in North East England, as well as the sixth-largest football stadium in the United Kingdom.

Football had been played at St James' Park as early as , the ground being occupied by Newcastle Rangers, before becoming the home of Newcastle West End F.

Its lease was then bought by Newcastle East End F. At the turn of the 19th century, the ground's capacity was given as 30, before being redeveloped between and , increasing the capacity to 60, and making it the biggest stadium in England for a time.

For most of the 20th century, the stadium changed very little, despite various plans for development of the ground.

The old West Stand was replaced with the Milburn Stand in , the Sir John Hall Stand replacing the Leazes End in , and the rest of the ground renovated making the ground a 37, capacity all-seater stadium.

Between and , double tiers were added to the Milburn and John Hall stands to bring the venue up to its current capacity of 52, There were plans to build a new 90, seater stadium in Leazes park, just behind St James' with Newcastle Falcons taking over St James' Park, but due to protests the plans were dropped.

St James' Park currently seats 52, people, but club owner Mike Ashley would consider taking the roof off The Gallowgate end and adding another 6, seats making the total capacity to 58,, but only if the team manage to finish in the top six places of the Premier League.

In October , Mike Ashley announced that he planned to lease the name of the ground in a bid to increase revenue, and in November the stadium was temporarily renamed sportsdirect.

The company, owned by Ashley, were not paying anything for the deal. Since , the stadium is served by St James Metro station on the Tyne and Wear Metro.

The station is decorated in a black and white colour scheme, with archive photographs of the club's players. The club's current training ground is located at Darsley Park , which is north of the city at Benton.

The facility was opened in July and is also used by the Newcastle Falcons rugby team. Newcastle United was set up as a private company limited by shares on 6 September Later that year, Hall stepped down as chairman and was replaced by Shepherd, with the Hall family represented on the board by John's son Douglas.

This was later dropped after the Competition Commission , established in April , expressed concerns about football clubs being owned by media companies.

Since completing the purchase of the club, Ashley has announced that he planned to sell the club on three occasions. The first occurred after fan protests over the resignation of Kevin Keegan on 14 September , when Ashley stated, "I have listened to you.

You want me out. That is what I am now trying to do. In April , it was reported that a group led by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia was finalizing an offer to acquire Newcastle United.

The sale has prompted concerns and criticism, such as arguments considering it sportwashing of the country's human rights record, as well as ongoing large-scale piracy of sports broadcasts in the region.

In May , two Conservative MPs called upon the government to scrutinize aspects of the deal, with Karl McCartney calling for the sale to be blocked, and Giles Watling calling upon the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to hold an oral evidence session regarding sports piracy in Saudi Arabia.

And the WTO ruled that it was behind the piracy campaign using pirate-pay-service beoutQ. Newcastle United established the Newcastle United Foundation in summer , which seeks to encourage learning and promote healthy living amongst disadvantaged children, young people and families in the North East region, as well as promoting equality and diversity.

If Newcastle defender Steven Taylor tells them not to eat a Mars bar for breakfast, they'll listen. The Foundation's commitment, along with a similar foundation run by West Bromwich Albion , the unique relationship that Aston Villa has with Acorns Children's Hospice and Tottenham Hotspur has with SOS Children's Villages UK , are some leading examples of commitment in the highest level of football to responsibility and change in the communities in which they work and who enrich them through their support and ticket sales.

The work of these clubs, and others, is changing the way professional sport interacts with their communities and supporters. In December , the club announced that it had become the world's first carbon positive football club.

Supporters of Newcastle United are drawn from all over the North East and beyond, with supporters' clubs in some countries across the world. The name Toon originates from the Geordie pronunciation of town.

The total distance travelled for a fan to attend every away game from Newcastle was found to be equivalent to a round-the-world trip.

In , some Newcastle fans boycotted games in protest of club management by Mike Ashley , and they were supported by famous club fans like Sting and Jimmy Nail.

The club's supporters publish a number of fanzines including True Faith and The Mag , along with NUFC. They set up Newcastle United Supporters Trust in September , aiming to "represent the broad church of Newcastle United's support.

As of the —20 season, Newcastle United have spent 88 seasons in the top-flight. They are eighth in the all-time Premier League table and have the ninth-highest total of major honours won by an English club with 11 wins.

The club's widest victory margin in the league was in the 13—0 win against Newport County in the Second Division in Their heaviest defeat in the league was 9—0 against Burton Wanderers in the Second Division in Newcastle's record home attendance is 68, for a First Division match against Chelsea on 3 September Newcastle lost the game 2—0.
